How to Stain Kitchen Cabinets

Staining your kitchen cabinets is one of the ways in which to give your cabinets a traditional or country look should the cabinets be made with the right wood materials. This happens because the staining process is able bring out its natural and old-fashioned charm. To achieve the correct country look, you’ll need to choose from many different types of wood stains available in traditional high street stores. Please note, it takes time and patience to stain your kitchen cabinets. Don’t think that this will be a one coat wonder project and always consider using a professional decorator where you can. It could save you the cost of replacing your cabinet if you do it incorrectly.

Difference Between Painting and Staining

There are several differences between painting and staining. First, staining can make your kitchen look older as that is it’s intended result. Secondly, staining can fade or turn yellow over time if not done correctly. Thirdly, If you change your mind and wish to repaint your kitchen later on, it can be more difficult to paint over the stain.

On the other hand, painting will update your kitchen making your cabinets feel new and modern. If you use a brush technique you can still get that traditional wood grain look and feel, if you spray paint you can achieve a high end off the shelf Ikea/B&Q look. You just need to buy the perfect paint colour for you. Also, paint is easier to repaint over if you need to change the colour in the future.

Painting or Staining Your Kitchen Cabinets

Staining your kitchen cabinets is a good idea if you want to restore their original look, while painting will give them a modern look. While staining is going to be cheaper, both can cover and conceal the blemishes and imperfections in your cabinets. Both will help your cabinets to stand out, painting more then staining, but you have to consider the pros and cons of each finish. After considering these differences, you’ll be able to decide which one is best for you.

If you want to know how to stain kitchen cabinets, follow these steps.

Step 1: Preparation

The first thing you need to do is remove all the hardware and appliances from your cabinets such as under cabinet lighting. If you can’t remove them then mask them carefully with masking tape. You should also remove all the contents of your cabinets.

Step 2: Degreasing

With a clean cloth, water and a degreasing agent, wipe down your cabinets. You’ll need to remove the dust, dirt, oil and grease from your cabinets. Don’t hold back and wipe thoroughly, if you miss any grease or oil it could stop the stain or paint from sticking.

Step 3: Sanding

Since cabinets are usually made of wood, you’ll need to sand them. If you skip this step, your stain will not stick to your cabinets. The stain or paint needs a clean rough surface to stick to. You’ll know if you’ve not done step 2 or 3 correctly should the paint peel once dried. You should also remove any chips, dents, and marks on your cabinets.

Step 4: Applying Stain

Do some research on the stain tin you’re using to see if a coat of sealer is needed. Then, add a coat of stain that is the same colour or darker than your cabinets. Always follow the instructions on the product packaging. In some cases we advise that you apply a layer of varnish to protect your cabinets after you apply the stain.

Step 5: Finishing the Project

As soon as your cabinets are dry, you can start putting your kitchen back together.

Note: Remember to use gloves when you are handling the stain products.

I hope the above helps.
