Making Your Kitchen Christmas Ready

Transforming Your Space to be Chrismas Ready with Professional Painting and Decorating

Yes, I know. Am I really talking about Christmas? But with Christmas-themed decorations, gifts, chocolates and mince pies already in the shop, it’s time to talk about the grinch in the room because now there’s no better time to infuse your home with the warmth and magic of Christmas. Summer has gone, if it ever came (what a useless summer we had), but living in a home with an outdated summer theme is like living in the past. There’s nowhere more important to feel at home than in your kitchen, and there’s nothing more important than it being Christmas ready.

Your kitchen is the heart of your home. If each year you’ve ever felt like your home lacks that Christmas feel, or if it’s missing that cosy winter love, you’re not alone. But fear not! I’m here to help you transform your kitchen into a Christmas wonderland that captures the season’s essence.

As a professional painter and decorator based in Broadway, I’ve worked on many homes and kitchens, and although I do charge for my services, this blog is about sharing my top tips on making your kitchen ‘Christmas ready’ for free.

Let’s dive straight into the transformative ideas that will make your kitchen the heart and soul of your Christmas celebrations.

Christmas kitchen decor - preparation for a family holiday, fairy light

Tip 1: A Dash of Festive Colour

Let’s start closer to home (for me), and discuss what you can do regarding painting because nothing says Christmas like a splash of festive colours in your kitchen. It’s time to bid farewell to the everyday neutrals and embrace the season’s warmth. Painting a feature wall or a specific area in your kitchen with Christmas red or winter blue can instantly set the mood. I realise you’re not going to want to keep painting your kitchen every time we change seasons, so find a feature wall or small space in the kitchen that, when painted, can have a massive impact. Above the cooker, under the cabinets, or the wall next to the door as you walk in.

Consider:

Christmas Red: This bold and vibrant shade radiates festivity. Consider painting an accent wall or your kitchen island with Christmas red. The rich and inviting hue is perfect for showcasing your holiday spirit. Combined with some sparkling decorations, it can be a focal point that draws everyone in. Get the kids to help by adding some Christmas stickers that easily peel off.

Winter Blue: Winter blue is calm and soothing, reminiscent of a chilly winter’s day. Use this shade to create a serene atmosphere in your kitchen. Painting your cabinets or a cosy breakfast nook in winter blue can make your kitchen a tranquil escape during the busy holiday season.

Tip 2: Bring Winter Indoors

To make your kitchen Christmas ready, it’s all about bringing the charm of winter indoors. A great way to do this is by incorporating decor and accessories that remind you of the season. Here are some ideas to consider:

Snowy Accents: As mentioned previously, this can be an excellent way to get the kids involved. Add a touch of frost to your kitchen with snowy decorations. White and silver ornaments, frosted wreaths, and snowflake-patterned dishware can create a winter wonderland ambience. Each person will have their own view on the type of ornaments they want.

Winter Greenery: Fresh evergreen branches, wreaths, and garlands can infuse your kitchen with the delightful scent of Christmas. Hang them above your cabinets, around the window frames, or on your kitchen island. You don’t have to go as far as having a holly circle on the front door; I don’t. But having a few small branches in a small cleaned-out jam jar can really add some character to your kitchen.

Candlelit Magic: Candles exude warmth and cosiness. Place scented candles, such as cinnamon or pine, on your kitchen table or countertops. The soft, flickering light will create a magical atmosphere. I appreciate that you can’t cook in candlelight but having them flickering away in the background as you sip a late-night hot chocolate can really help you get into that Christmas feel.

Tip 3: Dress Up Your Kitchen Cabinets

Your kitchen cabinets are a canvas waiting to be transformed. Consider having your cabinets professionally resprayed to give your kitchen that Christmas charm. This elevates the aesthetics and provides a fresh, durable finish that can withstand the demands of a busy kitchen. This isn’t something you’ll get done just for Christmas, as a respray should last years, but if your cabinets are outdated and not helping with the winter or summer vibe, it’s time to change them.

Professional Respraying: At my Broadway-based decorating business, I specialise in professional cabinet respraying. Through my expertise, I can give your kitchen cabinets a beautiful and long-lasting makeover that works all year around.

Tip 4: Create a Christmas Display

Transforming your kitchen into a Christmas haven goes beyond the walls and cabinets. It’s about curating a festive display that captivates everyone who enters. I know what you’re thinking: some kind of shine with images of Santa Claus, but this could be as simple as having a board for all your Christmas cards or your children’s Christmas paintings.

Also consider:

Open Shelves: If you have open shelving in your kitchen, use it to showcase your Christmas spirit. Arrange your favourite Christmas-themed dishes, mugs, and decor items for all to see. We all have that ‘I love Christmas’ Mug from B&M, the one with the nobbly bits on it that’s hard to drink out of and too hot to touch when used to hold a cuppa tea, but having those on the open shelves can help set the seem.

Countertop Elegance: Or adorn your countertops with a Christmas centrepiece. A festive arrangement of flowers, pine cones, and ornaments can add an elegant touch to your kitchen. Done overdo it so it looks like a mini nativity play, but carefully done, it can brighten up the Christmas charm.

Kitchen Island Focal Point: Turn your kitchen island into a focal point of your Christmas display. Create a stunning arrangement of holiday treats surrounded by decorations to entice your guests when they come around. Make it that go-to Christmas place that everyone congregates around.

Tip 5: Personalise Your Kitchen

To truly make your kitchen Christmas-ready, infuse it with your personal touch. Personalisation turns your kitchen into a unique space that reflects your style and the season’s spirit.

Homemade Decorations: Get creative with homemade decorations. Involve the whole family in crafting ornaments or decorating gingerbread houses. These homemade items can add a sentimental touch to your kitchen.

Family Photos: Display cherished family photos in festive frames. Surrounding yourself with memories of loved ones during the holidays can make your kitchen feel extra special.

Christmas Music: Create a Christmas playlist with your favourite holiday tunes. Play it in the background while you prepare meals or enjoy gatherings in your kitchen.

For me, Christmas can never come too early, and the sooner I get into the Christmas spirit, the more ready I feel for the winter break. That said, I have a rule. No Christmas tree should ever be put up before December 1st.
